As Picasso tells the story, an uncle who was a doctor happened tobe on hand saved his life by blowing cigar smoke in his nose. Then, picasso says, “i made a face and began to cry”.
Picasso personally was a many faceted as his achievements. He combined insatiable curiosity with a reluctance to dwell on anything that did not serve his art. Reticence with sociability; elaborate courtesy with moody neglet a yearning for attention with a demand for privacy. He had a flair for the unorthodox, a freedom of thought and behavior and a personal dynamism that evoked widesspreed response.
Picasso’s first teacher was his father, Don Jose Ruiz Blasco, askilled painter of tradional subjects like the one obove at the left. Don’s Jose’s teaching method was academic and his directing his son learned to paint with meticulous accuracy.
Picasso’s father and uncle decided to send the young artist to Madrid’s Royal Academy of San Fernando, the country’s foremost art school. At age 16, Picasso set off for the first time on his own, but he disliked formal instruction and quit attending classes soon after enrollment. Madrid, however, held many other attractions. The Prado housed paintings by Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, and Francisco Zurbarán. Picasso especially admired the works of El Greco; elements like the elongated limbs, arresting colors, and mystical visages are echoed in Picasso’s later work.
After World War I, Picasso made a number of important relationships with figures associated with Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Among his friends during this period were Jean Cocteau, Jean Hugo, Juan Gris and others. In the summer of 1918, Picasso married Olga Khokhlova, a ballerina with Sergei Diaghilev’s troupe, for whom Picasso was designing a ballet, Parade, in Rome; and they spent their honeymoon in the villa near Biarritz of the glamorous Chilean art patron Eugenia Errázuriz.
